This legislation proposes to allow people who are permanently or temporarily residing in a nursing home, rest home or similar facility, the right to have a video camera installed in his or her room as a potential safeguard against abuse or neglect. Upon request by the resident, a camera would be installed and in constant operation within he or she’s room. If there are any complaints of abuse or neglect the video can be viewed by appropriate authorities to investigate and to take appropriate action as deemed necessary.
It is unfortunate that these types of measures need to be implemented, but we all watch the news, or read the papers, and stories of abuse are often prevalent. Several constituents brought a grave situation to my attention many years ago that prompted me to take legislative action to help others who might be experiencing abusive conditions in similar settings. This is hopefully one measure that can be taken to help eliminate such dangerous situations.
